Many Kenyan girls work in tea fields where working conditions are poor and sexual violence is common.
The Purpose Behind Skills Training
One of the most important things we do in Kenya is to educate the next generation. We’ve emphasized skills training to provide education to young women who believe their only option is working in tea fields.
A handful of young women in Kenya can not afford to go to school as they come from single-parent households. Additionally, in Kenya, men are favored over women. Therefore, sons are allowed to go to school more often than daughters. A majority of the time, girls who are not educated work in tea fields where rough working conditions and sexual violence are common.
Neema Girls Project empowers women to escape tea fields by providing them with education and skills training, such as beadwork, baking, and sewing. Young women in our program range between ages 12 and 24. Some of the women did not finish high school and some of the women did finish high school. Neema Girls Project has a tutor come in regularly for the young women in our program. Also, the older girls assist in tutoring the younger girls.
